As previously reported, Audi has always prioritized safety for its customers and currently has some of the safest cars and SUV’s in the industry. In a recent effort to ensure that passengers remain safe in the event of a collision, this latest Audi patent is for a new safety feature, a pivoting seat backrest designed to reduce passenger acceleration, therefore reducing injuries. This new innovation aims to increase passenger safety by taking advantage of the natural forces that occur during a collision, reducing the impact felt by those inside the car. For a more in-depth description, read more below.

A vehicle comprising of at least one seat body having a seat surface, and a backrest connected to the seat body, wherein an inertial force acting on a passenger in the seat in a collision is transmitted by at least one seatbelt arrangement to the backrest in such a manner that the backrest pivots forwards using a force generator relative to the seat body. To generate said force, the passenger information is taken into consideration in such a manner that if force is greater, the greater the weight or the height of the passenger. Furthermore, a fingerprint sensor is provided as sensor, by which sensor data relating to the fingerprint of the passenger are detected at the beginning of the journey and evaluated by the control device for ascertaining the identity information.

According to the NHTSA, traffic fatalities are on the rise. Do you think safety features like this can really help reduce traffic fatalities? Let us know below!
