Audi Workers In Mexico Make History With First-Ever Strike

The Audi plant in Puebla, Mexico, has been rocked by its first-ever strike since its opening over seven years ago. The unionized workers, represented by Sitaudi, have taken to the picket lines to demand higher wages and benefits. As negotiations continue in Mexico City, this strike marks a significant moment in the labor history of the country, coinciding with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s leadership.

The workers are advocating for a salary increase of 15.5 percent, including benefits, which they believe is a fair and just demand. The German automaker, however, has only offered a 6.5 percent salary increase for this year’s contract. This significant gap in salary increase offers has led to the workers’ decision to go on strike, as they feel that their voices and needs are not being addressed.

This strike comes on the heels of last year’s unprecedented auto union strikes in the United States, orchestrated by the United Auto Workers (UAW). The UAW strikes resulted in historic pay increases at Ford, GM, and Stellantis. This development has set a precedent for the Audi workers in Puebla, as they see this as an opportunity to demand better pay and treatment from their employer.

The workers’ union, Sitaudi, represents over 4,000 workers at the plant, and their demands are not unfounded. Inflation in Mexico was recorded at 4.66 percent by the end of 2020, and the proposed 6.5 percent salary increase by Audi is not enough to keep up with the rising cost of living. The workers are committed to fighting for their rights and ensuring that their voices are heard.

The timing of this strike also holds significance as it coincides with President Obrador’s leadership, who has been a staunch advocate for workers’ rights and fair wages. This strike serves as a test for his administration’s promise to prioritize the well-being and livelihoods of the working-class population. The workers’ union and President Obrador must work together to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that takes into account the workers’ demands and the company’s financial capabilities.

While the strike may bring inconvenience and disruption to the Audi Q5 production process, it is essential to recognize the workers’ bravery and determination to fight for what they believe they deserve. It is a clear sign that the Mexican labor force is standing up for their rights and demanding to be treated with fairness and dignity.

The ongoing strike at the Audi plant in Puebla serves as an important moment in the history of labor in Mexico. The workers’ demands for better wages and benefits are reasonable and necessary, and it is crucial that their voices are heard. The negotiations in Mexico City must result in a fair and just agreement that ensures the well-being and livelihoods of the workers while also taking into consideration the company’s financial capabilities. This strike is a reminder that the working class is an integral part of the economy and should be treated with the respect and fairness they deserve.
