Here is why Audi is Intentionally Making their EVs Vibrate

Car enthusiasts often find the sound, vibration, and power of a vehicle soothing and invigorating. It has long been thought that these vibrations were a key part of the experience for drivers and riders alike. But with the rise of EVs (electric vehicles), many were left wondering: what happened to the beloved vibrating experience? Fortunately, Audi has a fix for this.

Audi recently filed a patent called “Method For Operating An Electric Vehicle With Feedback.” In this patent, they state that they can replicate engine vibrations throughout both EVs and PHEVs, whether it be in the steering wheel, seat, or gas pedal. The reason for this is not only for EV and PHEV acceptance but also for safety; here’s why.

Audi EV vibration patent for EVs

The recent patent states: “The vibrating electric motor can quite realistically simulate a naturally vibrating internal combustion engine and give the driver of the electric vehicle a readily perceivable and usable haptically perceivable feedback as to the operating condition of the electric motor. Thanks to the feedback, the driver has better control over the torque provided by the electric motor and the driver’s acceptance of the electric vehicle is increased.”

“It is noted that the fluctuating torque furthermore counteracts a sudden and unrecognized loss of adhesion of the drive wheels (wheel spin) of the electric vehicle in a limit range of acceleration of the electric vehicle, thus improving the control of the electric vehicle and increasing the driving safety of the electric vehicle.”

In short, this artificial vibration theoretically should help with traction issues and increase driver satisfaction, especially for a high performance vehicles (looking at you R8 successor). Let us know what you think!
