Audi has unveiled a comprehensive facelift for its Q7 and Q8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, boasting significant upgrades in battery technology, driving modes, and exterior design.
Improved Battery Technology and Efficiency
At the core of the Q7 55 TFSI e and Q8 55 TFSI e is a re-engineered liquid-cooled lithium battery. The new battery uses 17 cells with 70 Ah each, arranged in six stacks connected in series. This compact design eliminates the need for an additional module housing, resulting in higher power density.
The optimized battery delivers a maximum capacity of 25.9 kWh (gross) at 370 volts, a substantial increase compared to the previous generation. This translates into an impressive all-electric range of up to 90 kilometers in urban areas.
Enhanced Driving Modes
The PHEV models now offer more efficient driving modes for optimized energy management. The ‘EV’ mode allows pure electric driving, while the ‘Auto Hybrid’ mode automatically switches between electric and combustion engine operation. The new ‘Battery Hold’ mode preserves the battery’s charge for later use, such as for driving in emission-restricted zones.
Updated Exterior Design
Audi has refreshed the exterior design of both models to accentuate their strong and confident character. The front and rear aprons have been redesigned, featuring sharper lines and more aggressive accents. The Q7 receives a new grille with vertical slats, while the Q8 sports a wider and more striking grille.
Improved Handling and Dynamics
For the first time, both PHEVs are available with all-wheel steering, providing increased agility and safety. At low speeds, the rear wheels can turn up to five degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels, reducing the turning radius and improving maneuverability. At higher speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, enhancing stability and cornering ability.
Additionally, electromechanical active roll stabilization (eAWS) is now available, ensuring even more dynamic handling. The system uses electric motors to adjust the stiffness of the suspension, reducing body roll and improving cornering performance.
Pricing and Availability
The updated Audi Q7 55 TFSI e1 and Q8 55 TFSI e2 are now available for order. Prices start at 91,398 USD (85,500 euros) for the Q7 and 99,309 USD (92,900 euros) for the Q8. Deliveries are expected to commence in the coming months.
